Musings & Meanderings: Childhood homes, how designed spaces affect our behavior, retreats vs workshops vs residencies, where to submit your work, recent interviews, more

By Leslie Lindsay A curated newsletter on the literary life, featuring ‘4 questions,’ reading & listening recommendations, where to submit, more Leslie Lindsay|Always with a Book ~MUSINGS & MEANDERINGS~ Hello, Friends! I have recently been on TWO writing retreats. They were both pretty fabulous. Being able to travel for these events is a true privilege and I am so very grateful to my supportive partner, who says, “Go! Have fun, learn some stuff.” In doing this, I have returned re-energized, my writing soul fed, some good ol’ fashioned nature-immersion, gained clarity (or validation) on my writing projects, but also–sometimes I feel overwhelmed. Maybe I’m in over-my-head (like others are way better writers than me, or more experienced). I don’t always get as much writing done as hoped. There’s a difference between what these writing excursions consist of. The words may sound the same, but I assure you, the definitions vary. Retreats: Typically a (long) weekend of writers (often with an instructor/mentor) who convene at the same location to talk craft, have write-ins, maybe some readings …

Write on, Wednesday: Writing Retreats

By Leslie Lindsay Last week, I was at a writing retreat. With a warm fire roaring in the distance, a gentle snow cascading from the gray sky, my laptop propped on my lap, and the ideas a-flowin’, it was a slice of glorious heaven. Oh, wait. It wasn’t. Instead, I was laid up on the couch with a laptop and a bum knee. Not quite the romance and mystique I was going for, but well…there was snow.    [not my actual fireplace…image retrieved from http://ecoopportunity.net/2012/02/fireside-chat-leadership-from-the-top-in-the-green-economy-2/fireside/ on 2.18.14] If you’ve ever dreamed of attending a writing retreat, you’re not alone. Some 200 retreats exist across the U.S. They range in size, scope, and practice and also vary in your overall goals. Do you want to steal away to the Montana mountains where you can write your heart out in rustic setting, or would you rather head over to Monterrey or Sausalito, California where you could be a writer-in-resident in the warm sun?  Do you want to partake in the prestigious Iowa Writer’s Workshop (MFA program)? It all depends …

Write On, Wednesday: New Year…Get Writing!

By Leslie Lindsay Welcome to 2014!!  Yay…I am so excited to begin a fresh new slate for writing.  Here’s what we have in store: Laura Munson will be with us next week discussing her memoir, THIS IS NOT THE STORY YOU THINK IT IS about turning 40, her failing marriage, horse farm, and being in charge of your own happiness. But there’s more: how is a memoir different than non-fiction? Her wring process, and her Haven Writing Retreats. And she’s graciously offered a give-a-way copy as well. Speaking of retreats…why not make one for yourself? We’ll show you how. Perhaps you’d like to attend a conference this year?  Feeling chicken? We’ll talk about why they are important, what you can learn, and so much more. How about those writing contests?  What are *they* about, anyway?  Notoriety, sure. Credentials…okay. But it’s also about getting your work in front of folks who *may* help you get to where you want to go this year–publicationland. Hint: it’s all about networking. We’ll talk, too about the best writing books and resources …
