A Couple Tackles the Great Continental Divide on Bikes for their 25th Anniversary

By Leslie Lindsay  It’s that time of year again…a whole flock of new grads are setting forth from educational institutions worldwide, ready to take on the world. But what if, what if…your goals falter? What if, maybe, you’re not sure what you want to do with your life? Because forever is a mighty long time. Recently, I connected with Carrie and John Morgridge. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary two summers ago by doing something quite arduous: they conquered the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route with only their bikes, a few supplies, the support of friends, and a very strong will to finish.  They’re not your ordinary mountain bike trail riders. They manage a multi-million dollar Denver family foundation that supports education and encourages philanthropy. And then Carrie wrote a book, THE SPIRIT OF THE TRAIL: A Journey to Fulfillment Along the Continental Divide (Amazon, May 5, 2018) about their experience. I think you’ll find their story not only inspirational in terms of attaining your goals, but in fulfilling all facets of your life.  Carrie has …

The Teacher is Talking: Establishing Rules for Summer

By Leslie Lindsay (image source: kidssummerprogram.com) We try to be timely and topical here on “The Teacher is Talking,” so with that in mind, I’d like to share with you a little glimpse of our Sunday morning family meeting.  The topic:  summer rules and expectations.  Kate, my 2nd grader and her little sister, Kelly (kindergarten) affectionately refer to themseleves as “red-year-olds,” are sitting around our round kitchen table grasping at breakfast items, lifing their skinny little bottoms up out of their chairs when my husband and I locked eyes across the table.  “I think it’s time to talk about summer rules and expectations,” he grumbled.  That got the red-year-olds attention.  They sat down and looked at their daddy, “What do you mean?”  “He means,” I pause and look to the girls, “That summer is not going to be a free for all.  We’ll have rules, boundaries…but also some fun.”  The four of us mapped out some summer rules (we’ll call them expectations–it sounds less jail-like that way) and some fun challenges…as well as rewards/fun things …

The Teacher is Talking: Goals…the rewards of higher Education

By Leslie Lindsay   Remember this poster from Deck the Walls, that print store that one could find in just about every mall across the country in the late 1980’s and 1990’s?  I don’t think we ever had this poster in our home, but my dad would point it out to me every time we were in that store, “And this is why you need to study hard and go to college.”    And speaking of malls… how about those kiosks that cluttered the “mall hall” with cheesy inspirational sayings?  Yep–I’m talking “Succesories” here (http://www.successories.com).  Seems they had a plaque or poster or something for everything “important” in life” success, goal-setting, teamwork, creativity…   Bear with me, I am getting to something.  Last week, we talked a little about the idea that failure may be the best antidote for success… and today, I present a little blurb about goal setting.  That’s right:  those goofy little benchmarks we give ourselves to see if we are measuring up.  Or, maybe it’s not a ‘measuring up’ thing at all–but …
