Miciah Bay Gault talks about her luminous literary thriller, GOODNIGHT STRANGER, how she wasn’t trying to write a thriller, finding an agent, reincarnation, plus a fabulous reading list

By Leslie Lindsay  Deeply compelling and highly disturbing at times, GOODNIGHT STRANGER is a suspenseful literary thriller with themes of grief, love, and human behavior.  This is one of those books that is as eerie as moving, for me, and also has a bit of magical realism/suspended belief that may excite and intrigue. As a debut, GOODNIGHT STRANGER (Park Row Books, July 30) is darn good. Lydia and her brother, Lucas live in their family’s ramshackle home on fictional Wolf Island (just off Cape Cod) and while they are adults, they haven’t exactly ‘launched.’ Lydia is 28 years old when the story begins and she’s a college dropout with dreams of going back. She left Brown when her mother became ill. Her brother is a bit ‘different’ in the way he sees the world. Pathologically shy, Lucas spends his time doing odd jobs and living in the home shadowed by past events. And ghosts. Lucas and Lydia are the two remaining children of triplets. The other child, who is referred to as ‘Baby B,’ died tragically as an …

Write on Wednesday: Sharon Guskin talks about her smashing novel THE FORGETTING TIME, reincarnation, how novels are like magnets, crawling around the dark with a flashlight, eliminating 80 pages, and so much more

By Leslie Lindsay  THE FORGETTING TIME is a jaw-dropping, intelligent novel about the power of love, reincarnation, and motherhood. What if what you did mattered more because life happened again and again, the consequences unfolding against continents, decades, and race? What if you are a mother who will stop at nothing for her young son, the one who wants to go home, the only trouble is: he’s already there? Everything with Noah is hard. His mother, Janie will concur. He’s terrified of water, so getting him to bathe is a battle she chooses to ignore. He smells and says odd things to classmates at his preschool. What’s more, he has debilitating nightmares that often scares Janie, too. But no one knows how to help Noah. Until we meet Jerome Alexander, M.D. a man who has his share of worries, but is quite intrigued with the scientific aspects of reincarnation. In fact, he’s spent his life’s work on tracking down such cases, researching, and writing about it. What Sharon Guskin has done for THE FORGETTING TIME …

Write On, Wednesday: Julie Christine Johnson on her gorgeously written debut IN ANOTHER LIFE, featuring southern France, reincarnation, love, and her ‘addiction’ to re-invention

By Leslie Lindsay  Gorgeously written with a descriptive hand, this debut is one not to be missed. I was immediately transported to the southwestern region of France (Languedoc, to be precise), and found the poetic writing had me yearning for the luxuries found only in Europe. Through Julie Christine Johnson’s evocative use of words had me bathed in a richness of wonder, scent and visual images. Be sure to scroll to the end of the interview where you can link to Julie’s website and learn all about her editing services, query clinic, and story development services.  Lia Carrer, a historian by education finds herself seeking out southern France as a grieving widow, following a freak accident of her cyclist husband. She plans to rebuild her life, but she does not plan to fall in love. Blending romance, mystery, history, and suspense, IN ANOTHER LIFE is ultimately about love and loss, but it harbors an ancient murder, a fantastical view of reincarnation and time travel, presented through the lens of an alternating time period between present-day and …
