Several years ago, maybe 2008, I spied an adorable children’s book jacket. It was propped up on display at the mall bookstore and I was immediately drawn to it. You see, on the cover of this book was a Bassett Hound–my favorite dog breed! So of course I had to purchase the book. I justified that it was for my little “ladybug,” which is one of many nicknames for my youngest daughter.
In fact, it was partly because of this book, that I chose to decorate my daughter’s bedroom in a ladybug-bassett hound theme. No kidding. I had already decided on the ladybugs well ahead of time, but throw in this book, and it was a done deal: the hound was sure to make a home in my little bug’s room. In fact. I had several (okay, A LOT) of stuffed Bassetts from my childhood (and even young adulthood) stowed away for a rainy day. The day had come! It’s raining bassetts!!
So, just who are the folks that write these books about an adventurous and imaginative little girl named Lulu and her pup, Bingo?! Well, you guessed it–I did a little research. Written by a husband-wife team, Jackie Davis and David Soman, the books are really quite simple but sweet. I am in the camp that feels the illustrations are the best part, mostly because I love to coo and ahh over that dog. Not only that, but I love the fun, whimsical font used in the book. Adorbable!
