I am so grateful, honored, and humbled to have had the opportunity to record the audio version of Speaking of Apraxia: A Parents’ Guide to Childhood Apraxia of Speech. A Timeline of SPEAKING OF APRAXIA: When my first-born wasn’t speaking like other children her age, I worried. When her pediatrician said, “I think she might need an assessment from a speech-language pathologist (SLP), I gulped. Really?! Not my kid. Just shy of her third birthday, she was diagnosed with moderate-severe Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). What is CAS? Quick definition: a neurologically-based motor speech disorder in which kids know what they want to say, but have have difficulty organizing the movements needed for speech. It is not something kids outgrow, but requires frequent, intense speech language therapy, often for many years. I wanted a book. Apraxia Monday: Welcome to Better Speech & Hearing Month

For a lot of you, this is the month of crazy last days of school, Mother’s Day, Graduations, and perhaps birthdays…it’s busy.  And it’s also “Better Speech and Hearing Month.”  This annual event, sponsored by ASHA (American Speech-language Hearing Association) is a way to generate awareness and promote better treatment options for folks–big and little–who have trouble communicating and hearing.  http://www.asha.org/bhsm/.  You may also be interested in reading ASHA’s blog on the event, http://blog.asha.org/ So let’s kick off this 85-year event with a little tip sheet on how you can help your own little kiddo(s) with their speech concerns, namely CAS (childhood apraxia of speech).  DO A LITTLE DANCE, MAKE A LITTLE WORD What you need: Adult and child. What you do: The adult calls out different kinds of movements: “Touch the sky way up high—touch your toes way down low—wiggle your hips—rub your tummy.” Child plays along and can repeat words as she feels ready. In My Brain Today: Coming Up in April & May

By Leslie Lindsay With the release of “Speaking of Apraxia” sort of behind me for now, I thought I’d give you all a little head’s up as to what is coming down the pike for the next couple of months–in the blog world, anyway. Friday’s “column” is changing from “The Emerald Isle” to “Celebritrees” seeing how April celebrates Earth Day and Arbor Day.  I will be presenting little known tid-bits about these majestic living organisms that have been around for a long, long time.   In May, Friday will present interesting facts, musings (and yes, frustratios), of moms in honor of Mother’s Day.  In fact, just yesterday I ran across a book titled, Carpool Tunnel Syndrome.” As a former R.N. and current “carpool mom,”  I totally got a kick out of that!   May is also “Better Speech and Hearing Month,” so I will give you some ideas on how you can help your kiddos at home with their speech on “Apraxia Monday.”   “The Teacher is Talking” (Tuesday), is shifting gears a bit from …
